Question of the day…

Best and worst sports-related Christmas present you ever received. Think back and hit me with your best and worst. We will hit these on the radio too.

  1. When I was seven and my little brother was four, we each received a box of socks from our uncle’s family. My brother started crying. We still bring it up and laugh about it every Christmas twenty years later.

  2. I received a SF 49ers Jeff Garcia Jersey this year for my birthday. As we know he’s now playing for his 3rd team since leaving the 49ers, but my mom said she got a great deal on it!!! Oh well!

  3. I grew up in Philly. One year I received an LA Rams trash can. While this may have been during the Vince Feragamo Era, I wasn’t a Rams fan. It did make a good basketball hoop for playing “horse” with crumpled up wrapping paper.

  4. I got cable TV one year to watch the Cubs!! The CUBS!! Well at least I still got the cable and can follow other teams.

  5. When I was 7 I got a Dallas Cowboys bath-set. It had a towel with the Star on it, and of course soap on a rope! That’s a great memory, but if the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle counts…then that would be it.

  6. When I was 9 years old, my dad gave me a Sandy Koufax autographed baseball. Unfortunately, I was stupid and used the ball in a park game with some friends. I wish my dad would have had the ball in a plastic case when he gave it to me. I do have a Nolan Ryan autographed ball in a plastic case. I got that at age 30.

  7. Easy, a new first basemen’s glove, age 10.
Worse is even easier, a Red Sox jacket when I was 13, for a WHITE SOX fan living in Chicago. Grandma didn’t know there were ‘White and Red’ teams.

  8. I’m a Colts fan. One year, my boyfriend gave me some really SCANT Colts undies, darn near a “thong”.

Ok, I love the Colts, but I let him know; don’t think that you can put the ole’ horseshoe on it, and pass that one by me. It didn’t work.

Colts or NO Colts, I ain’t wearin’ it.

  9. Best – Air hockey

Worst – That football game, where the you set up the play up and turned the thing on and it vibrated, causing the “players” to move. Anyone remember that one?

  10. The best present that I got the most milage out of was the “VCR Quarterback Game”. If you don’t remember it was a board game where you drew cards and if your card said “VCR”, then you got to answer a trivia question based on a video clip from an OLD NFL game. I played that thing for hours a day. I think my mom got sick of hearing the same clips over and over again and sold it at a garage sale!

  11. three years ago i got manning, harrison and edge jerseys. its tough to live in New England and wear them but I still do.

  12. Well, I would have to say that it’s this year’s X-mas present of being a Morgantown native, WVU alumni, having my university in position to play in the BCS championship until we lost the last game of the season vs. the #58th ranked team in the nation(and that’s after they beat us), the Pittsburgh Panthers. Yet still ranked 9th in the country by many and going to the Fiesta Bowl to play against the 3rd ranked Sooners, and our native son Rich Rodriguez sends a graduate assistant to the AD’s office with his resignation and news that he’s going to Michigan with two of our assistant coaches, trying to pry a third away, and calling recruits such as the top ranked qb in the nation that narrowed his choices down to Ohio State and WVU, “just to let him know” he was going to Michigan…If WVU doesn’t get him, I certainly hope he goes to Columbus and the Wolverines never see a “W” in the rivalry in his tenure.

So while Michigan may be a step up the coaching ladder nationally and may be the winningest program of all time, it will never be home.

And now West Virginia won’t be either.

We West Virginians are a prideful bunch.

  13. Naturally the above is my worst present ever….I’m having a hard time thinking of my best at the moment as this wound is fresh.

  14. My wife and I are Jewish, so Christmas gifts are not the norm in our home. However, the wife does give me sports-related birthday presents every year (my birthday is in December, so it feels like Christmas). This year she took me to see the Lakers in Philadelphia. Last year, she bought me Sirius radio so I can listen to NFL games when driving through Pennsylvania every other weekend. Two years ago she bought me tickets to a Raiders game in DC (though, one might consider Raider tickets a bad gift these days). What is better than a wife who encourages your sports addiction?

  15. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley of California in the 60’s I was a huge LA Rams fan. My younger brother could not care less about football, he was a baseball fan. On Christmas morning one year we opened similiar sized boxes and they contained a football helmet, jersey and a football. Mine was the Green Bay Packers and his was the LA Rams, MY TEAM!

His was a size small and mine was a Medium. I tried and tried to fit in to the Rams helmet and jersey but when I tore the jersey putting it on, he ran and told my parents I “broke” his shirt.

I was sent to my room and watched my little brother play football in his LA Rams helmet with the rest of the neighborhood, while I sat grounded in my bedroom looking out the window.

  16. Best: A Franklin Mint(esque) scale model of a Zamboni with Avalanche branding and a hood that actually lifts up to show you the scale model inner workings of the watering system.

    Worst: Jake Plummer jersey.

  17. One of the best sports related was Strat-o-matic Baseball or Football…my friends and I would play for hours and hours..have leagues,fight..crush the cards..Good times!!!!
    The worst….Pong!!!

  18. Dan,

I tried to email you privately but, your email button on your website does not work. I am compelled to write you and this is the only way I can find to do it. It concerns your radio show today. In the middle of a segment concerning Kelly Tilghman debacle and the noose on the cover of some golf magazine, you took the time to honor the passing of one Bobby Fischer, chest master. You chose to ignore how he spent the last half of his life, which is fairly well known. Bobby Fischer was well known antisemitic SOB. Who spoken openly in interviews about his hatred for all Jews. How ironic that you would call out Al Sharpton while glorifing the life of Booby Fischer. You owe your listeners (of which I am one) an apology or at least be a little more truthful in your eulogy of him.

Hear are just a couple of snipets from interviews with the great Bobby Fischer.

“This is the Jewish mentality. These are a criminal people. They torture their prisoners in the worst way. It’s even illegal! They don’t even deny it hardly. Jews were always were always bastards throughout history. They are liars, they are the worst pieces of shit in the world. They mutilate their own children…You know the Jews control the courts…The United States is a farce controlled by dirty, hook-nosed circumcised Jew bastards.”

“…What’s the difference between a good Jew and bad Jew?…The good Jew fucks you slower.”

  19. Our first year together, my boyfriend bought me a Peyton Manning bobblehead. Love Peyton, but I say it ranks right up there with Carmen’s thong. All about the Colts, but don’t want Peyton staring at me from all angles. The next year I received a Colts blanket — much better gift.

  20. Last year I bought a Mike Vick Atlanta falcons Jersey. I thought it was beautiful, its been in storage since this summer.

  21. How can I email the DP show????? Help I cant firn d this anywhere!!!!!!!

  24. Great stuff as usual…I personally have embraced the new technologies and the CMS platforms, I think the new tools only make the web designs better. I am glad that new technologies are coming out in web design that make things easier, improved, and better looking for design.

  25. The response to local and national disasters is awesome but it’s a real shame that so many people take advantage of the negative situations.

I mean everytime there is an earthquake, a flood, an oil spill – there’s always a group of heartless people who rip off tax payers.

This is in response to reading that 4 of Oprah Winfreys “angels” got busted ripping off the system. Shame on them!
